James’s interest in a career in the construction industry began when he worked as a carpenter for his father, a Melbourne house builder, during his school holidays.
This intermittent work experience through college and university years provided a basic understanding of the principles and practices of building design. It was also a healthy head-start when it came to undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering Civil and Infrastructure at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
Following graduation, James worked on a variety of projects including standard residential dwellings and multi-million dollar mansions. On many of these projects, James was responsible for concept and town planning design, initial construction design, structural engineering design and client liaison.
After completing a number of designs for commercial and industrial projects, James decided to further his career and extend his growing interest in seismic engineering by moving to Auckland.
Since starting with Prendos in 2017, James has landed exactly where he hoped. He is contributing to design work on the seismic strengthening of Takapuna Grammar School, structural designs for one-off structures using seismic and snow design criteria and preparing reports for earthquake-related structural damage in the earthquake devastated region of Kaikoura.
“I love the challenges of being a structural engineer, there are multiple solutions to every project we undertake, the key to being a great engineer is finding the most efficient one – and the competitive streak in me really enjoys finding that one solution.”
