As Senior Architect with over 35 years’ experience in the design and construction industry, Henare has worked with both private and government clients. At Respond Architects, he collaborates with an in-house team of multi-disciplinary experts to deliver quality projects.
Henare’s early interest in physics, art and design led him to pursue a career in architecture, working for innovative companies like Lockwood Homes and Murray North Engineers. He later achieved an architecture degree and building science degree from Victoria University of Wellington.
Further studies in Māori art and culture served to enrich and deepen Henare’s understanding of design. He believes great architecture encompasses not only environmental, social and political dimensions, but – more importantly – people and life.
Henare’s wide and varied experience spans everything from residential architecture to educational and cultural design. He designed and built his own home at age 19, and has since designed and built numerous projects for respected clients. He previously ran his own design firm and has worked as Principal and Head Architect at other agencies.
Perhaps his most prestigious design achievement was the Māori Exhibition ‘Mana Whenua’ at Te Papa Tongarewa National Museum of New Zealand.
