Honda New Zealand decided to relocate staff from their leased Wiri office space to their Newmarket building, bringing together the retail and wholesale arms of their business.
Client: Honda New Zealand Ltd
Location: Newmarket, Auckland
Services Provided: Design, Project Management, Fire Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Structural Engineering, Asbestos Surveying
Prendos’s architectural team, Respond Architects, was engaged to design the new head office space within the existing warehouse building.
Honda’s vision was for a calm and functional office space with Scandinavian design influences and a Japanese garden. Timeframes were extremely tight, as the offices had to be ready before the old lease expired.
Because of the short timeframes and fluid design requirements, Respond had to work flexibly in order to accommodate changes without compromising the programme. A multi-disciplinary team was brought together including designers, project managers, asbestos surveyors, fire engineers and structural engineers. In-house quantity surveyors monitored costs throughout the project, enabling us to keep a handle on expenses and report regularly to Honda.
One of the most difficult aspects of the job was bringing the existing building up to current standards in terms of fire regulations. Prendos fire engineers prepared a full Fire Report in the initial stages of the project, so any design impacts could be identified up front. A plan was then put in place to ensure adequate fire safety measures between the office and functioning workshop area. Honda also requested a detailed seismic analysis to ascertain where any structural weaknesses might exist, which was carried out by our in-house structural engineers.
The resulting design has delivered on Honda’s brief of a light, bright, modern office environment where two previously separate teams can work effectively as one. Respond expanded the influence of Japanese architecture throughout the fitout to reflect Honda’s history, creating a unique internal Japanese garden and introducing other innovative design features while still meeting tight project deadlines
Utilising our in-house specialists meant asbestos, structural and fire engineering work could take place quickly, efficiently and in full consultation with Respond’s designers. Prendos project management oversight and quantity surveying input also ensured a smooth, coordinated and cost managed approach.
